About the Delay Director

 

Sarah Martinez is the head orchestra director at DeLay Middle School and the assistant orchestra director at Huffines Middle School. Mrs. Martinez grew up in Lewisville, attending LISD schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade. She started playing the violin in 6th grade at Huffines Middle School. Mrs. Martinez took violin lessons from Guillermo Maciel for six years while in middle school and high school. She continued playing violin through 12th grade and graduated from Lewisville High School in 2007. In the summer after graduation, she started working at a music store, Music and Arts, and continued working there throughout college. Mrs. Martinez decided to continue with violin in college, and went to the University of Texas at Arlington in fall 2007. She studied privately with Associate Violin Professor, Dr. Martha Walvoord. While at UTA, she performed in string quartets and the UT Arlington Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Clifton Evans. In 2009, she became a violin and viola private lesson instructor at Durham Middle School. In her last semester at UTA, Mrs. Martinez completed her student teaching residency with Mr. Phil LaRocque at Lakeview Middle School, and Dr. Kathlene Goodrich at Marcus High School. After student teaching, Mrs. Martinez graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors from UTA in December 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with Teacher Certification: All-Level. After graduating, she became a long-term substitute teaching orchestra at Faubion Middle School in McKinney ISD in spring 2012. Mrs. Martinez was the assistant director at Durham and Lakeview Middle Schools in 2012-2013. This is Ms. Bigler’s third year as the head director at DeLay Middle School.

Mrs. Martinez has two younger brothers who also play string instruments, Chris and Kyle. Chris plays the viola, and Kyle plays the violin. Chris is attending the University of Texas at Arlington this year, majoring in Music Education. Kyle is attending LHS, and is a member of LHS Honor Orchestra. In Mrs. Martinez's spare time, she enjoys seeing movies, playing word games, and spoiling her cat, Jackson.
